Inspired by the old coffee houses of Kolkata and set to open in late July, Custard will be the first bakery and wine bar from Harneet and Devina Baweja, owners of hit Shoreditch restaurants Gunpowder, Madame D and Gul & Sepoy.
Custard will specialise in savouries, pastries and sandwiches from across the Indian subcontinent alongside European influences. This exciting new 40 cover bakery and wine bar will be open all day (8am-11pm) serving breakfast and lunch through to pre and post theatre snacks. Expect to see Butter Chicken Puffs, Bombay Sandwiches, Goan Pork Sausage Rolls and Mutton and Egg Sandwiches, available to eat in or take away. Sweet treats might include Sour Narangi Custard Tart with Pistachio Meringue and Almond Cherry & Ghee Cake, alongside soft serve custard.
The old coffee houses of Kolkata were highly social environments, places where people of all backgrounds and cultures would gather to share stories or simply sit back and enjoy an excellent cup of coffee (Custard’s will come from Ozone Coffee Roasters).
“I’ve been aching to launch a bakery for so long. In today’s fast-paced society, we’ve completely lost the art of sitting down together and enjoying each other’s company over something simple but delicious to eat and drink. I aim to bring that back. We’ve got a great location at Tower Bridge and I want to recreate the relaxed atmosphere of the old coffee houses of Kolkata”, says Harneet.
